The Distraction of Attraction

I’ve had quite a few requests lately for information regarding the law of attraction.  All of these requests come from people who recognize the error in this way of thinking, but wish to confront the error with scripture.  (Another example of why we need to read our Bibles!!!)

The “Law of Attraction” is “the idea that because of our connection with a “universal energy force,” our thoughts and feelings have the ability to manipulate this energy force to our liking.”  (GotQuestions.org)  This is taught specifically in “The Secret”, a teaching by Rhonda Byrnes.  On her website TheSecret.tv, she writes, “The Secret is the culmination of centuries of great thinkers, scientists, artists and philosophers.  In The Secret film and her book of the same name, Rhonda Byrne presents teachers alive today who impart this special wisdom that has been known by so few. They include some of the world’s leaders in the fields of business, economics, medicine, psychology, history, theology and science.  The Secret reveals amazing real life stories and testimonials of regular people who have changed their lives in profound ways. By applying The Secret they present instances of eradicating disease, acquiring massive wealth, overcoming obstacles and achieving what many would regard as impossible ”

“The essential message of “The Secret” is that we all have the power to determine our own destiny. We can all create our own reality. Through fully and consistently applying the “law of attraction,” we can be who we want to be and have everything we want to have.” (GotQuestions.org)

Another name for this philosophy is “positive Thinking” or “Positive Confession”.  In what is known as the “Word Faith” movement, positive confession is practiced as a way of getting what we want from God, especially financial blessings.

The Law of Attraction puts trust in man, or ourselves, instead of God

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”  Proverbs 3:5-7

“Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.”   2 Corinthians 3:4-5

“You felt secure in your wickedness, you said, “No one sees me”; your wisdom and your knowledge led you astray, and you said in your heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me.”  But evil shall come upon you, which you will not know how to charm away; disaster shall fall upon you, for which you will not be able to atone; and ruin shall come upon you suddenly, of which you know nothing.;” Isaiah 47:10-11

“Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD.”  Jeremiah 17:5

When we desire things we do not have, it is called coveting.

“You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.”  James 4:3

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.”  1 Timothy 6:10

“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.  Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” James 1:14-15

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”  Matthew 6:33

If we put our trust in ourselves, and desire what we do not have, we essentially reject the sovereignty of Christ in our lives.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,  and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”  Colossians 1:15-20

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.”  Psalms 73:25

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

Through scripture we are called to contentment.

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?””  Hebrews 13:5-6

“Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.  But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.”  1 Timothy 6:6-8

God’s word is ABSOLUTELY sufficient in itself.  “The Secret” relies on hidden information passed down through the generations, but scripture assures us that God’s Word is ALL WE NEED.

“The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.”  Psalm 119:160

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness”  2 Timothy 3:16

“knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.  For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”  2 Peter 1:20-21

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.  For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.  Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 5:17-19

“But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.”  Matthew 22:29

“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. Two things I ask of you; deny them not to me before I die:  Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me,  lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.”  Proverbs 30:5-9

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”  Matthew 24:35

God’s word is all we need.  Period.  Scripture tells us of who God is, who Christ is, and who the Holy Spirit is.  It reveal to us the doctrine of salvation, and what to expect as the return of Christ comes nearer.  Anyone who tells you that you “need” anything but the work of God to learn about God is in essence, leading you astray.

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.  And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.  And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.  2 Peter 2:1-3

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.  By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,  and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.  Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them.  We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.”  1 John 4:1-6

“For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.  But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand.”  Mark 13:22-23

“‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false.  I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary.  But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.  Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.  Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate..”  Rev 2:2-6

The best thing you can do, when presented with information that is not coming directly from scripture, is to go to the Bible and find out if that information agrees with God’s word, or if it is contradictory to God’s Word.

“Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”  Acts 17:11

    • Just saw this quote: “The pampering of the flesh, is the quenching of God’s spirit.”
–Thomas Watson. Seems many who are into this law of attraction/positive thinking just want what they want when they want it. That will surely lead many away from the TRUE God.
