I don’t have cable TV. So I’m not always privy to the shows that come from cable channels. I did however get a bit acquainted with the popular show “Duck Dynasty”. The programs I watched were entertaining. That’s about all I know.
Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Robertson family has been under media scrutiny a few times for his views on social issues. Particularly what he has said about homosexuality. What he says in this video, however, is telling of what he REALLY believes.
Phil is quoting 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. “
Are you on that list? I am. Phil is. Even Paul, the apostle is. But the end of that verse tells us the good news- Christ has come to wash us clean and save us from eternal punishment. Through Christ, we are justified. Through Christ we are delivered out from the burden of our sinful nature, and given a new nature. New. That’s almost too good to be true, isn’t it?
We can learn from people like Phil Robertson- not because he’s famous, but because he’s honest. He has been given faith in Christ, but he used to be dead in sin. He shares this because he wants everyone to know the promise- that through faith, we are saved. Christ saves us. Nothing else can, or will.
“That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile–the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10: 9-13
